Having an escape plan in place and well known by your family members and household is really important.
Should any type of emergency happen, everyone needs to know how to get out of the house and where to meet. Here are some helpful tips to make sure your family is prepared as we enter the beginning of fire season.
Ensure that all household members know two ways to escape from every room of your home, and where to meet up outside.
Practice your fire escape plan at least twice a year and at different times of the day. Practice waking up to smoke alarms, low crawling and meeting outside.
Decide where you would go and what route you would take to get there. You may choose to go to a hotel/motel, stay with friends or relatives in a safe location or go to an evacuation shelter if necessary.
Practice evacuating your home twice a year. Drive your planned evacuation route and plot alternate routes on your map in case roads are impassable.
Plan ahead for your pets. Keep a phone list of pet-friendly hotels/motels and animal shelters that are along your evacuation routes.
